Coming off another disappointing loss to the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics look to bounce against the struggling Pistons on Monday night. Boston shot 40.0 percent and allowed LeBron James to score 24 of his 30 points in the second half of a 104-93 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. It was the Celtics’ second consecutive decisive loss to the East leaders, and it concluded a six-day stretch where the Atlantic Division leaders went 1-3 after winning four in a row.

Though the aging Celtics have a comfortable division lead, they are fourth in the East, 10 games behind the Cavaliers and looking like a team that’s playing tired, rather than inspired. Though Boston’s big three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are in their 30s, they are still some of the NBA’s top all-around players. Allen scored 20 points while Pierce and Garnett each had 18 on Sunday. As a group, however, Boston’s struggles have come on both ends of the court.

With Adrian Dantley filling in as coach while George Karl undergoes cancer treatments, Denver has trailed at halftime in every game of this trip. The Nuggets’ latest rally featured one of their best fourth quarters of the season.

Denver was down six at the half and tied after three periods Saturday, but scored 40 points in the fourth and won 125-108 at Memphis. Reserve J.R. Smith had 16 of his 30 in the final period, which the Nuggets opened on a 12-0 run. Four other reserves combined for 27 points, and backup point guard Anthony Carter added seven assists in less than 17 minutes. The Nuggets last swept a four-game trip April 2-8, 2005. Smith averaged 21.5 points as Denver won the first two matchups of the season with the Rockets, whom the Nuggets have not swept since going 3-0 in 1977-78. Carmelo Anthony missed Denver’s last two visits to Houston, where he has had his share of problems.

In danger of losing three straight for the second time this season, the Jazz return home Monday night to face a Wizards team that will continue a grueling stretch. Utah has lost back-to-back games for the first time since a season-worst three-game skid from Dec. 31-Jan. 4. After winning their previous four, the Jazz stumbled down the stretch of their trip. Despite shooting 57.9 percent from 3-point range, Utah lost 119-111 to Oklahoma City on Sunday night in a matchup of teams jockeying for playoff position in the Western Conference. The Jazz are in fourth place, one-half game ahead of the Thunder. Injuries certainly didn’t help Utah’s cause. Center Mehmet Okur and forward Andrei Kirilenko were missing from the starting lineup, and the pair are questionable for this game.

Okur was held out after playing a season-high 41 minutes in a 95-87 loss to Milwaukee on Friday night. Kirilenko left that game in the second half. Okur and Kirilenko are the team’s third- and fourth-leading scorers, respectively, combining for 25.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Paul Millsap started for Okur and C.J. Miles took Kirilenko’s spot. Wesley Matthews, who has started 13 straight games since Ronnie Brewer was traded to Memphis on Feb. 18, is coming off an outstanding game. The undrafted rookie guard made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 29 points.

In danger of losing an eighth straight road game, the Hornets look to extend a 12-game winning streak against the lowly Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. New Orleans is 7-14 since losing Chris Paul to a knee injury. The three-time All Star may be a week away from returning, but it’s too late for the Hornets to make a playoff push. Trailing eighth-place Portland by 7 1/2 games in the Western Conference, New Orleans has virtually taken itself out of the postseason race with its poor play. A loss to Los Angeles would give the Hornets eight straight road defeats for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

New Orleans has lost nine of 11 overall, allowing 108.9 points per game. The Hornets, though, have been much tougher defensively against the Clippers, surrendering an average of 90.2 points during their winning streak against them. The Clippers have lost seven straight overall entering their final contest with the Hornets this season. Still, even this might be a matchup too tough for an injury-riddled New Orleans team to overcome. The Hornets have dressed the league minimum eight players the past two games, including a 120-106 loss to Phoenix on Sunday night.

Returning from a four-game absence due to a strained left calf, Wade was 6 of 17 from the field and scored 21 points in Sunday’s 96-80 loss at Orlando. He missed four of five shots in the second half. With its four-game slide pushing it out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference playoff race, Miami needs a healthy Wade as it opens a three-game homestand against Golden State, which has lost six straight and 14 of 15 on the road. Pierce says he’s ready to return after missing the last three games with a sprained right thumb. The veteran forward, averaging 17.9 points and 1.2 steals, participated in Boston’s practice Monday. The Celtics are in desperate need of the help. They lost the final two games of a three-game homestand, 108-88 against Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland on Thursday night and 104-96 versus league-worst New Jersey two days later.

Defensive breakdowns have been the main reason for Boston’s rut. The Celtics have allowed an average of 108.0 points over their last four games. This is the first time Boston has allowed 100 points or more in four straight games since April 2007, three months before Kevin Garnett was acquired in a trade with Minnesota. The Celtics are facing a Pistons team that ranks 29th in the league in scoring with 92.4 points per game. Only the Nets have a lower average at 90.2. Boston hopes to bounce back on the road, where it has a better record this season than on its home court.

He scored 25 on Friday in a 109-92 rout of Minnesota, then had 29 on Sunday in 32 minutes as Oklahoma City blew out Toronto 119-99. Several teammates are helping Durant. There will be plenty of Lakers fans in the house Tuesday when Los Angeles tries to improve upon its West-leading 28-5 home record with its 11th consecutive victory at Staples Center against Indiana. Including three losses in the 2000 NBA finals, the Pacers are 0-13 all-time at Staples Center since it opened in 1999. For a team that’s had half of its losses come by at least 18 points, the Toronto Raptors’ turn from underachievers to winners of eight of nine certainly registers as an eye-opener. Since Dec. 18, though, Toronto has turned up its defense - allowing an average of 94.1 points - while operating an extremely efficient offense. The Raptors are shooting 50.4 percent and averaging 24.2 assists over their last nine games, both Eastern Conference bests. Coach Jay Triano’s club also is winning tight games. For a team that often seems like second-class citizens in its own arena, the Los Angeles Clippers are certainly making Staples Center feel like home lately. The Clippers seek their first six-game home winning streak in more than three years Sunday afternoon against the Miami Heat, who began their longest road trip of the season in impressive fashion. Los Angeles (16-18) came home from a six-game trip having lost its last three in blowout fashion, but it’s gotten back on track in playing four of its last five in comfortable surroundings.

The Clippers beat Boston 92-90 behind a big game from Chris Kaman on Dec. 27, and they’ve won their last three by double digits. The latest was the most significant, as 25 points from Baron Davis and 21 from Kaman paved the way to a 102-91 win Wednesday over the defending champion Lakers, snapping a nine-game slide against their Staples Center co-tenants. A victory over the Heat (18-16) would give Los Angeles six straight at Staples Center for the first time since Nov. 2-18, 2006. Miami has lost six of its last eight road meetings with the Clippers.

After bouncing back from a slow start, the San Antonio Spurs have stumbled twice in the past week. A matchup with the woeful New Jersey Nets could help them get back to winning. The Spurs will try to earn their 14th straight victory over the Nets on Sunday night. After splitting its first 18 games, San Antonio got on track by winning 11 of 13. The Spurs (21-13), though, have since dropped two of three. They lost 91-86 at Toronto last Sunday as their rally from a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit fell short. San Antonio rebounded for a 112-92 home win over Detroit on Wednesday and held a 10-point lead entering the final period against visiting Dallas on Friday night before the Mavericks scored 42 in the last 12 minutes to win 112-103.

Duncan has been the Spurs’ hottest shooter of late, making 57.5 percent of his attempts over the past five games while averaging 22.4 points. The perennial All-Star is shooting a career-best 55.4 percent and has averaged 28.7 points on 59.3 percent shooting in his past three matchups with the Nets. Duncan has scored 23.1 points per game in 22 career meetings, and New Jersey is one of three teams he’s averaged more than 23.0 against in his 13 seasons.

The Portland Trail Blazers haven’t been nearly as dominant at home this season as they were in 2008-09, but they did just win a visit from the team with the NBA’s best record. They haven’t been able to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers anywhere over the past two years. LeBron James has nearly averaged a triple-double in leading the Cavaliers to five consecutive victories over Portland, and they’ll look to make it three straight at the Rose Garden on Sunday night. The Trail Blazers (23-15) went 34-7 at home last season, but entered Friday night’s visit from the Los Angeles Lakers with six losses in their first 19 games in the Pacific Northwest.

Portland hadn’t had any problems with the Lakers at home over the past few years, and that held true again. Brandon Roy led the way with 32 points and Jerryd Bayless had 21 points in 21 minutes off the bench as the Blazers stretched their home winning streak over Los Angeles to nine straight with a 107-98 victory. Portland might have a hard time recording consecutive home wins over two of the NBA’s elite. The Cavaliers (28-10) have won five straight tight games over the Blazers since Jan. 30, 2008 - none by more than eight points - as James has averaged 30.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists.

The Milwaukee Bucks are surging into a season-high six-game western road trip, but the first stop is a daunting matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. While they have struggled on the Lakers’ home floor, the Bucks might face them in a vulnerable position Sunday if Pau Gasol is unavailable. Milwaukee is trying to match its longest winning streak of the season while dealing Los Angeles its worst skid in nearly two years.

The Bucks won eight of their first 11 this season, limiting opponents to 94.5 points per game. That defense faltered as they lost 15 of 19 and gave up an average of 101.3 points. Milwaukee (15-18) has tightened things back up to win three straight, allowing 88.7 points per game. Gilbert Arenas had 17 points, eight assists and six turnovers for Washington in that contest. No Celtic is averaging more than Pierce’s 18.1 points, but six are scoring at least 9.4 per game to maximize the efficiency of an offense that leads the league in field goal percentage (49.4).

The Hawks had averaged 113.0 points in their previous five games, and the defeat was the team’s first since a 114-107 loss to New York on Dec. 4.

The Hawks, who haven’t lost back-to-back games since Nov. 21 and 26, hope their offense can return to form against a Minnesota team that struggles on the defensive end. The Timberwolves (5-23) are allowing an average of 105.0 points, and have let three of their last five opponents score at least 120. In Sunday’s 122-104 loss at Boston, Minnesota allowed the Celtics to shoot 51.9 percent. The Wolves fell behind by 15 in the first quarter and went into the half trailing 66-41.

After a 1-8 start, Memphis (12-15) has quickly turned things around, winning 11 of 18 since.

Although some of those wins have come over struggling teams like Minnesota and Philadelphia, the Grizzlies have also claimed victories over division leaders Dallas, Cleveland and Denver in the past 2 1/2 weeks. The Grizzlies, who lost 58 games last season, led Denver by as many as 23 points in improving to 7-3 at home since Nov. 14. Randolph has been a big part of the Grizzlies’ 6-3 record this month. Randolph, acquired in an off-season trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, matched a season high with 32 points and had a career-high 24 rebounds Sunday. He is averaging 21.8 points and 13.4 boards in December after averaging 16.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in his final six games of November.

Nowitzki is recovering from a gruesome collision with Houston’s Carl Landry in the first quarter of Friday’s 116-108 overtime loss that ended a five-game win streak. Landry lost five teeth, two of which became embedded in Nowitzki’s right elbow.

Nowitzki needed several stitches and lots of medication and treatment as the elbow is sore, stiff and sensitive to the touch. The Mavericks (20-8) didn’t seem to miss the eight-time All-Star on Sunday, as Tim Thomas filled in and had 22 points and seven rebounds in a 102-95 win over Central Division-leading Cleveland. If Nowitzki can’t play Tuesday, Thomas would likely get a second consecutive start. The forward is averaging 8.8 points and 2.3 boards in 12 games - 11 as a reserve.

He carried Houston on Saturday against Oklahoma City, however, a night after Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry combined for 51 points in an overtime win at Dallas. Ariza scored a game-high 31 and played 47 minutes in the 95-90 home win over the Thunder.

Bryant faces the Knicks for the first time since a spectacular 61-point performance in February as the Lakers try for a fourth straight victory Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Los Angeles (10-3) got an average of 31.0 points from Bryant during its 8-3 start without an injured Gasol, who returned and had 24 points and 13 boards last Friday in a 108-93 win over Chicago. Gasol had 15 points in Sunday’s 101-85 rout of Oklahoma City.

New York (3-10) gave up 31 points to Gasol in a 126-117 loss to Los Angeles on Feb. 2, 2009, but it was Bryant’s 61 that was the story. Bryant made 19 of 31 shots and all 20 free throws to set a Madison Square Garden record. Los Angeles has won four straight against New York, which is beginning a three-game trip in a building in which it has had little success. The Knicks are 3-17 overall at Staples Center, although all of the victories have come against the Lakers. The Knicks are 0-10 there against the Clippers.

Crawford had 26 points off the bench to lead the Hawks to a 113-105 win over Sacramento on Wednesday night, a day after scoring 27 in a 97-91 victory over Portland.

Crawford, acquired in a trade with Golden State in June, is averaging 17.8 points and shooting a team-best 92.0 percent from the free-throw line. He’s made 50.8 percent from the field after finishing each of the past seven seasons under 42 percent. Atlanta is averaging 108.0 points with Crawford taking some of the scoring burden from Joe Johnson, averaging 22.8 points. Crawford is no stranger to being a reserve. He played that role in parts of four seasons with New York and earlier in his career with Chicago.

The Bobcats shot 32.4 percent against New Jersey on Monday night, but held the Nets to seven points in the third quarter of a 79-68 win. Charlotte was helped by a strong effort from Gerald Wallace, who had 24 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. That was the top scoring performance by a Bobcats player this season. Wallace is shooting 33.3 percent, but he’s averaging 14.0 boards and has keyed a defense that has given up 87.5 points a contest.

The New Jersey Nets swept four games from the Philadelphia 76ers last season for the first time. The way the injury-plagued Nets are playing, it’s unlikely that will happen in 2009-10. New Jersey looks to avoid the first 0-6 start in franchise history when it visits Philadelphia on Friday night. The Nets knew this would be a tough year after trading second-leading scorer Vince Carter to Orlando in the
offseason. It’s been even more difficult with All-Star point guard Devin Harris missing the last three games with a strained groin and starting forward Yi Jianlian sitting out Wednesday’s 122-94 loss to Denver with a right MCL injury.

New Jersey has been hampered by poor third quarters, getting outscored in that period in the last four games - all double-digit defeats. The Nets were outscored 20-7 in the third in Monday’s 79-68 loss at Charlotte and coach Lawrence Frank’s halftime speech didn’t work Wednesday as the Nets were outscored 44-26. Frank is the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference in his seventh season and will be going up against a friend in 76ers coach Eddie Jordan, who was an assistant with Frank in New Jersey when the Nets made back-to-back NBA finals appearances in 2002 and 2003.

The 76ers are allowing opponents to shoot 45.1 percent from beyond the arc. That was a key to New Jersey’s success against Philadelphia last season, as the Nets shot 43.3 percent. Philadelphia hasn’t gotten much this season from oft-injured power forward Elton Brand , who is averaging 11.8 points and shooting 45.9 percent. Brand played in 29 games last season in the first year of a five-year, $80 million deal.

The 20-year-old Jennings may have to shoulder more of the scoring load with Michael Redd out for two weeks with a strained tendon in his left knee. Redd has averaged at least 21 points the last five seasons. With Rubio staying abroad, Flynn beat out Ramon Sessions for the starting job with Minnesota. Sessions played the last two seasons with the Bucks (1-2), starting 39 games in 2008-09, before they allowed him to leave after picking Jennings.
